COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: MEET REBUS WORKS

TEN MINUTE WALK FROM THE DUKES AT CITY VIEW

It's an art gallery + framing shop. It's a coffee shop. It's a local farmers market. Meet Rebus Works - the community space that's everything you need it to be.

Outside Rebus Works in Downtown Raleigh

In a world of mass-shopping centers and superstores, the conversation of quality over quantity is often drowned out in favor of the incessant need for endless variety. From 301-2 Kinsey St, Shonna Greenwell and Lee Moore stake a defiant protest in the name of two tried and true concepts: less is more, and local is always better.

Rebus Works started in 2003 as a neighborhood-based gallery run by artists, for artists, from the minds of local photographer Shonna Greenwell and printmaker Lee Moore. Notably, these two set out to showcase unique art mediums and artists that were often overlooked by Raleigh galleries at the time. From the beginning, the store's inherent resistance to the "expected" is showcased, but to the store's many loyal patrons, that authenticity is what makes the experience exceptional.

The aesthetic and hyper-local focus Greenwell and Moore infuse into every operation is the difference between Rebus Works and the rest of Raleigh - the store itself is a celebration of Oak City.

Local Coffee & Locally-Grown Plants

“The aesthetic and hyper-local focus Greenwell and Moore infuse into every operation is the difference between Rebus Works and the rest of Raleigh - the store itself is a celebration of Oak City.”

While the store's selection has grown exponentially since its inception to include grocery items, fresh produce + herbs, and a fully stocked coffee bar, they've doubled down on their dedication to sharing local products. With an extensive collection of NC goods, primarily sourced from small, specialized farms, you can guarantee the quality and freshness of what you are buying.

Not to mention, the weekly + weekend markets are always stocked with a wide variety of seasonal favorites for your choosing. Rebus Works has developed personal relationships with local growers and vendors over the years to consistently and affordably offer fresh and in-season produce.

Shonna's background as an artist, gallerist, photographer and framer (long-list, we know), has intrinsically changed how she approaches the store. In fact, Greenwell will be the first to tell you that she stocks the shelves the same way she curates the art gallery - meticulously and with a keen eye for detail. In the building space underneath the Rebus Works, Greenwell also acts as the owner of pH 7 Fine Art Framing, where she creates custom frames for Raleigh's local art and memorabilia.

Working with everyone from local artists to the Contemporary Art Museum (CAM), Greenwell has made a name for herself as an artist throughout Oak City.

Oh - and did we mention that Rebus Works comes with its own massive garden just steps away that provide farm-fresh tomatoes, potatoes, and fresh herbs weekly? Because, of course, it does. Rebus Works does everything, and they do it well.
