COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: MEET DOROTHEA DIX PARK

FOUR MINUTE DRIVE FROM THE DUKES AT CITY VIEW

In the heart of Raleigh lies Dorothea Dix Park, a picturesque green space that feels straight out of a storybook. We’re talking 380 acres of rolling fields, historic buildings, and literal fields of flowers, people! This serene community staple is embedded in the urban landscape and rich history of Downtown Raleigh.

Dix Park From Above With the Downtown Raleigh Skyline

Founded on July 24, 2015, Dorothea Dix Park is designed to be “A Park for Everyone, Built by Everyone.” From its inception, Dix Park was meant to be innovative and inclusive - a place for all people in the Raleigh community to enjoy. Owned by The City of Raleigh, this park kicked off what is sure to be a massive transformation to become what some are calling “America’s next great public park.” The planning process began in 2017, and in early spring 2019, the Raleigh City Council unanimously approved the Dorothea Dix Master Plan for the long-term vision of the park.

Straight from the Dorthea Dix website: “The design comes from Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, the landscape design firm behind Brooklyn Bridge Park and Maggie Daley Park in Chicago. It features a multifaceted design incorporating community spaces, botanic gardens, water features, and secluded woods.”

Currently, the park serves as a vibrant community space. You can easily spend a beautiful day strolling thru wide-open fields in search of the perfect shady grove to picnic and relax in. You can even bring your furry friends! Boasting a large 3+ acre dog park where owners are invited to play with their pups off-leash, Dix Park has become a haven for dog-lovers throughout the Triangle.

Notably, their annual “Pup-a-Palooza” has become a much-anticipated event in the Triangle complete with a whole day of play for pups, adoption information from local shelters, dog toy and accessories vendors, and food trucks + craft beer for the humans! While in the upcoming Master Plan, there are expected changes to the Dog Park - The Raleigh City Council has invited all pup-parents to share their expectations and vision for what they believe the new spaces should look like.

Welcome to a sunny escape in the heart of DTR!

Meet your neighbor - only half a mile from The Dukes At City View.

The park isn’t just the home of local community events, but more significant, national festivals and celebrations! Notably, 2018 served as the first year that the “Dreamville” Music Festival was hosted by the park. Organized in collaboration with the Dreamville Foundation, a national nonprofit founded by NC - native recording artist J. Cole, this much-anticipated event took Raleigh by storm. All funds raised at this all-day music festival go towards supporting the Dix Park Conservatory and the Dreamville Foundation’s mission to “uplift the urban youth of Fayetteville, North Carolina by bridging the gap between them and the world of opportunities that are available to them.”

The inaugural Dreamville festival hosted some of the biggest names in the music industry - and the tour list hasn’t been any less impressive since!!!!! After having a stacked lineup, including headliners like SZA, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, ScHoolboy Q and the man himself J. Cole performed last year, they certainly set the bar pretty high for next year's lineup.

With all of the exciting progress and events going on at Dorothea Dix Park, there has never been a better time to find your place at the park. This City of Raleigh’s comprehensive greenway plan includes expanding access points to make the park more accessible than ever. With the massive transformation soon underway, you can be a part of the progress and forever-changing landscape of Downtown Raleigh.
